Amazon's Sumerian Is A Web-Based Development Service For VR/AR Apps

The company's Amazon Web Services unit announced Amazon Sumerian, a new service for building VR, AR, and 3D applications that can be viewed on mobile devices, head-mounted displays, digital signage, and web browsers.

The service is now in preview.

Sumerian doesn't require any extensive 3D graphics expertise, and can be used by a broader group of professionals to create valuable experiences. Amazon Sumerian will be available for preview starting today, and works on all browsers supporting WebGL or WebVR graphics rendering such as Daydream, HTC Vive, iOS mobile devices and Oculus Rift. Sumerian also takes a note from Unreal's Blueprints interface, allowing creators with no coding experience to use a visual scripting tool to put together all the logic needed to make the world interactive.

A web-based editor for constructing 3D scenes, importing assets, scripting interactions and special effects, with cross-platform publishing.

On top of this, developers get access to a set of "hosts" - 3D characters that they can customize to interact with an end user. This library can be used with AWS Lambda to access other AWS services, while Amazon Polly and Amazon Lex are pre-integrated to add speech and language capabilities.

Amazon has launched a suite of tools promising to make it quick - and affordable - for any business to create slick-looking 3D virtual reality and augmented reality apps.

A library of pre-built objects and templates and the ability to upload your own 3D assets. Storage pricing for Sumerian 3D assets is 6 cents per gigabyte monthly, and the fees for the total volume of traffic generated by each scene is 38 cents per GB per month. Deploying those apps is also a problem, because each platform has its own unique specifications and processes that need to be tackled.

Immersive technologies such as virtual reality and augmented reality could soon become much more commonplace thanks to the launch early Monday morning of a new development platform by Amazon Web Services Inc. The library is fully integrated with Google's Tilt Brush and Blocks apps, letting you modify numerous objects to better fit your project.

"Customers across industries see the potential of VR and AR technologies for a wide range of uses, from educating and training employees to creating new customer experiences", said Marco Argenti, Vice President, Technology, AWS, in a statement.
