Jeff Sessions Says There Is 'No Reason to Doubt' Roy Moore's Accusers

Jeff Sessions Says There Is 'No Reason to Doubt' Roy Moore's Accusers

And the Republican National Committee appears to have pulled out from a joint fundraising agreement with Moore, according to filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Long a divisive figure in his home state, Moore was twice elected chief justice of the Alabama Supreme Court and twice removed from those duties because of stands against gay marriage and for the display of the Ten Commandments in a public building.

The party's fraught dilemma is complicated further by the anti-establishment forces that propelled Trump to the White House and Moore to the nomination. Having pushed publicly and privately for Moore to get out of the race, Republicans believe their last best shot is Trump, who they hope can persuade his fellow political rebel to fall in line.

Moore was also reportedly banned from an Alabama mall in the 1980s due to a reputation for preying on high school-age girls.

The president backed Moore's unsuccessful rival, Sen. Luther Strange, whom Moore defeated in a September party primary, would have little chance against Moore.

Several false stories about the Post and Moore's accusers began circulating online soon after the newspaper detailed the accusations against Moore. National Republicans, including numerous same now abandoning Moore, withdrew their endorsements or halted their efforts on Trump's behalf at the time.

"That obviously would be a big move for him and for the President".

Kayla Moore, the wife of Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore (R), is urging her husband's supporters to report "inappropriate" contact with journalists, in an effort to collect evidence for a lawsuit.

He said Jeff Sessions, who held the seat, would be an "ideal candidate" but noted that Sessions is already attorney general. "This close to election, it's a complicated matter".

But for all the Washington machinations, in Alabama, then state party only tightened its embrace of Moore. One woman, Leigh Corfman, said she was 14 when Moore initiated sexual relations with her.

Also possible is a write-in campaign, but national and Alabama Republicans consider that a longshot to succeed. "As the President is winding his way back to the United States, I'm confident this is an issue they're discussing in great detail", McConnell said. If Moore's name is withdrawn, there is no process to replace one candidate with another on the ballot. That leaves the state party with limited options.

Alabama's special election is set for December 12. That's a dramatic downward shift for Moore, who led by 9 points the week before in the National Republican Senatorial Committee's internal numbers. Al Moore shared a recording with The Associated Press.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has joined a number of other elected officials calling for Moore to drop out of the race. "We need to discover the truth", he continued.
