NYPD Officer Hailed as 'Hero' for Apprehending Suspect

NYPD Officer Hailed as 'Hero' for Apprehending Suspect

Officer Ryan Nash, 28, was at Stuyvesant High School in lower Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon with his partner John Hasiotis responding to a call that a student was threatening to kill himself when people told them of the pandemonium a short distance away.

Police Commissioner James P. O'Neill said the weapons were later determined to be a paintball gun and a pellet gun. "So we all applaud and congratulate him", Cuomo said. Saipov was wielding what appeared to be two weapons that he refused to drop on orders from the officers, police said.

Nash fired nine shots at Saipov, ending the worst terrorist attack in New York City since September 11, 2001.

During a Wednesday news conference, Mayor Bill de Blasio said he's been in contact with the hero cop since the attack that killed eight. Witnesses reported the 29-year-old hollered "Allahu akbar", or "God is great!" in Arabic.

The young officer, who is reportedly from Medford, Long Island, was taken to Bellevue Hospital for ringing in his ears.

"He thinks what he did was not an act of heroism". Police Officer Ryan Nash risked his life to save others. "He did a good job", neighbor Gene Boles said.

"What he did was wonderful, you know, helping to keep anybody else from being killed", said neighbor Dino Cortina.

"He seems like a nice guy, we feel safer now knowing that there's a hero in our neighborhood", said neighbor Margie Cortina. "I think Officer Nash showed how important (patrol officers) are, and how talented they are and how fearless".

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo joined in the praise, calling the officer "talented" and "brave".

"To NYPD Officer Ryan Nash-thank you for your bravery & quick action in stopping yesterday's terrorist attack", former NYPD commissioner William J. Bratton tweeted Wednesday.

Nash is a New Jersey native who previously won two NYPD awards for Excellent Police Duty and one for Meritorious Police Duty, ABC News reported.

In Tuesday's attack, Saipov drove his speeding truck for almost a mile along the bike path, running down cyclists and pedestrians, then crashed into a school bus, authorities said.
