Russia Used Video Game Screenshots to "Prove" the US Is Assisting ISIS

Russia Used Video Game Screenshots to

"Regarding Abu Kamal, this is not the only case when the USA spares terrorists", Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov was quoted as saying by Russia's official TASS news agency on Tuesday.

Russia's Ministry of Defense ended up the target of derision after releasing an image it claimed to be "proof" that the USA military forces were working with supposed Islamic State soldiers. Instead, it said, American forces interfered with Russian air operations, allowing ISIS to recover and redeploy.

Users were quick to notice that one of the images was taken from a video game named "AC-130 Gunship Simulator: Special Ops Squadron".

Early on November 14th, the Russian Ministry of Defense posted messages on social media in Russian, Arabic, and English describing "irrefutable evidence" that USA forces were saving, not attacking ISIS forces.

It said the US-led coalition refused requests to cooperate and "eliminate fleeing Isis convoys".

The posts included several aerial images supposedly backing Russia's claim, including one labeled: "ISIS automobile convoy leaves Abu Kamal for Syrian-Iraqi border (November 9th, 2017)".

Another image purporting to show the same convoy in Syria was actually taken from a 2016 video published by Iraq's defence ministry, which said it was an Islamic State convoy fleeing Fallujah, Iraq, Conflict Intelligence Team investigators found.

A later press release said it had launched a probe into the actions of a civilian employee of one of its subdivisions who "mistakenly attached photos" to the first version of its statement.

United States military spokesman Colonel Ryan Dillon called the Russian statements a "barrage of lies", saying they were "as accurate as their air campaign". It's not actually from a drone, but from a video game.

"So again, that is pretty consistent with what we have seen come out of Russian MOD as being baseless, inaccurate and completely false". Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin showed American filmmaker Oliver Stone video on his cell phone he claimed was recent video footage of Russian troops fighting the Islamic State.
