Australia to bid for women's and men's World Cups

Australia to bid for women's and men's World Cups

Australia now have plans to renovate two of their major stadiums - Sydney's ANZ Stadium and Allianz Stadium - both stadiums will be crucial to their bid in 2027 but both are expected to be completed well in time for the World Cup, should they be awarded the opportunity to host it. The nation has never hosted the women's World Cup.

"I am especially looking forward to getting out into the rugby communities across Australia and meeting the diverse range of people that make the game tick", she said.

The New Zealander was announced as the successor to Bill Pulver at a press conference in Sydney on Tuesday.

Until now, women's rugby in Australia was divided into local and regional competitions, with there being occasional representative opportunities domestically.

Australia women's sevens co-captain and Wallaroos captain Shannon Parry is excited about what the competition means for the future of women's rugby in Australia.

Australia hosted the men's edition of the Rugby World Cup in 1987 (with New Zealand) and 2003 with great success, but has never hosted a women's Rugby World Cup.

Raelene Castle has shattered the glass ceiling in world sport after being selected to lead Rugby Australia, making her the first woman to oversee a national rugby organization in the history of the game.

And in further good news for the code, Rugby Australia has also signalled its intention to bid for the Women's Rugby World Cup in 2021.

"The Rugby World Cup is the pinnacle for our Qantas Wallabies and Buildcorp Wallaroos teams and we want to bring those tournaments home for any player, boy or girl, man or woman, who ever dreamed of lifting the Cup here on our home soil".

South Africa, who have bid for the last four World Cups, have not hosted the event since 1995 and could loom as major challengers for Australia in 2027, while New Zealand may throw its hat into the ring for the 2021 women's tournament.

"Without this leadership and vision from Government, Australian sports fans simply wouldn't have access to the world's biggest sporting events".
