Bitterly Cold As We Head Into the New Year

Bitterly Cold As We Head Into the New Year

Morning wind chill values will likely be in single digits with some spots seeing values close to zero.

We will finally get a brief break from our cold damp dismal loss of sunny weather for Saturday and part of Sunday. Some of us may see a few snow showers before midnight, but the real story will be the bitter cold, strong winds and painfully low wind chills. Single-digit wind chills will start the day without much warming by the afternoon.

Cold temperatures will continue through Friday, with a chance of snow flurries in the afternoon and bitterly cold temperatures continuing through the weekend. Officials say the weather could create potentially hazardous driving conditions over the weekend and drivers are urged to stay off the roads if possible and to create a safety kit for your vehicle if you do go out. Clouds will begin to return through the day, but we will warm back toward normal with highs in the middle 50s.

Most of the wintry mix should be done by mid-day - then the attention turns to the harsh cold expected to infiltrate the region throughout the next several days. It'll feel much better outside even though temperatures will remain below normal.

As temperatures fall below freezing Saturday night, patchy freezing drizzle is possible Saturday night into midday Sunday. Low: 42. Wind: S/SE 5 miles per hour.

Skies will clear overnight and temperatures will drop to around 10° below. As we ring in 2018, temperatures will be near 0, dropping as low as 10 below zero by Monday morning with risky wind chills as low as 30 below zero. Coldest temperatures that we have seen in a long time will settle in. It doesn't get much better in NY, where it could feel like minus-5 degrees, or in Washington, D.C., which is predicted to feel like 10 degrees.
