Central Intelligence Agency helped Russian Federation halt terrorist attack

Central Intelligence Agency helped Russian Federation halt terrorist attack

It is the second phone call between the two leaders since Thursday.

The White House said in its readout of the conversation that "based on the information the United States provided, Russian authorities were able to capture the terrorists just prior to an attack that could have killed large numbers of people".

Information provided by the Central Intelligence Agency allowed Russian law-enforcement agencies to prevent a planned attack on the Kazansky Cathedral in Russia's second city of St Petersburg, and arrest the plotters, the Kremlin was quoted as saying.

The White House has confirmed that the Russian president called his United States counterpart on Sunday after the CIA supplied intelligence which allowed Russia's security services (FSB) to break up a "terror cell" planning an attack on Russia's second biggest city.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) announced on Friday that it had prevented the activities of Daesh terrorist group's supporters in St. Petersburg, who planned to carry out a terrorist attack later in December. Trump was also asked to forward Putin's appreciation to CIA Director Mike Pompeo and the intelligence officials who obtained the information.

There was no immediate confirmation from US authorities that they had shared intelligence with Russian officials but White House press secretary Sarah Sanders tweeted a confirmation that the two presidents spoke on Sunday.

"But the primary point was to talk about North Korea, because we would love to have his help on North Korea".

A special counsel is investigating whether anyone from the Trump campaign colluded.

But diplomatic ties between Washington and Moscow are still fraught, with both expelling some of each other's diplomats in September and the U.S. designation last month of Russia's English-language news channel RT as a "foreign agent".

FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov said on Tuesday the country was monitoring the possible return of jihadists from Syria, a threat which has increased since Moscow's military intervention in the country.
