Does Trump Have It Out for Mitt Romney?

President Donald Trump is aiming to block Republican and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney's run for Utah's senator by trying to convince seven-term state Sen.

As a candidate, Donald Trump called for congressional term limits.

The president replied "yes" when asked Monday if he was encouraging the Utah Republican to run for re-election during a visit to a Salt Lake City food bank.

Romney has been preparing to run for Hatch's seat on the long-held assumption that the 83-year-old would retire, according to Politico. And indeed, Hatch was reportedly telling friends he wouldn't. "Morally different universes", Romney tweeted, following up with a Facebook post urging Trump to "act now for the good of the country".

Politico reported Sunday that Trump is going all out to persuade Hatch to seek re-election in no small part to prevent his longtime nemesis, Romney, from winning the seat.

Trump called Hatch in October to and requested he run again, sources familiar with the call told Politico.

Romney fiercely criticized Trump during last year's campaign and came to personify the "Never Trump" movement for a time.

According to Politico, Romney himself has grown frustrated by the "ongoing uncertainty" about Hatch's future plans, especially after the senator encouraged him to consider run in the first place.

The report also stated two senior administration officials who said Trump's favor for Hatch is not only for blocking Romney, but also because Hatch defended the president during a turbulent time when an "Access Hollywood" video tape leaked, which showed the POTUS bragging about sexually assaulting women. Rex Tillerson. Perhaps as a reaction to that particular humiliation, Romney has carried on his criticism of Trump, saying that the White House's response to the violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville "caused racists to rejoice, minorities to weep, and the vast heart of America to mourn", and bashing Trump for pulling out of the Paris climate agreement. Either way, Trump-not to mention his former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who is allegedly considering a Hatch endorsement-may not have much of a choice in the matter.
