Four dead after bus ploughs into pedestrian underpass in Moscow

A bus in Moscow rolled down a pedestrian underpass on Monday, killing 5 people and injuring 15.

The incident occurred near Moscow's Slavyansky Boulevard metro station on Monday afternoon.

Investigators are considering two possible causes of the accident: a loss of control over the bus by the driver and malfunctioning of the bus. Some unconfirmed reports said that more than 15 people were injured in the accident.

The driver of the bus had been detained by police, agencies said, after he lost control of the vehicle.

Photos and video on social media showed the bus' windshield smashed with at least one body nearby. Footage shows people scattering as the bus ran down wide steps before being brought to a halt by the tunnel's roof.

Interfax news agency reported that the bus was not even a year old. During the interrogation, the driver told that the incident occurred at a bus stop.

The people killed in the accident were crushed by the bus as it moved toward the station.

Russian news agencies quoted Moscow mayor Sergei Sobyanin as saying that he had ordered all city buses to be checked in the aftermath of the crash.

25 December is an ordinary working day in Russian Federation, as Orthodox Christmas is not celebrated until 7 January.
