Heavy snow cancel flights in UK

Flights from Birmingham and London Luton have been cancelled into Ireland West Airport (Knock) and Dublin Airport.

A number of flights across the United Kingdom have been cancelled today as a result of the heavy snow felt across much of the United Kingdom this weekend.

Birmingham Airport has also closed its airfield as a result of the snow, and has not given any indication as to when passengers can expect it to reopen.

Heathrow administration suggested that passengers check the status of their flights prior to traveling to the airport.

Four British Airways flights headed for Heathrow had to be diverted to Newcastle, 300 miles away.

In a statement today, British Airways said: " Heathrow is continuing to experience severe adverse weather conditions. Heavy rain overnight and snowfall this morning, combined with a reduction in the number of flights able to land at Heathrow have caused disruption to our flight schedule.

Schiphol airport, just outside Amsterdam, had cancelled more than 400 flights by early afternoon, while many others faced long delays.

Passengers flying south from Glasgow and Aberdeen Airports were also facing disruption.

Mr Robertson told the 's: "We have no issues - all of the cancellations are down to issues elsewhere".

A spokeswoman for Heathrow Airport said: "Heathrow airport remains open however we regret that weather across the United Kingdom is resulting in some passengers experiencing disruption to their travel arrangements. Airlines are responsible for ensuring their flights are fully de-iced before they are operated and this is resulting in some delays and cancellations". "Please check with your airline before travelling to the airport". Our operations team is working closely with the airport's on-site MET office, to monitor weather forecasts and minimise disruption to passenger journeys'.

'As always, Heathrow's top priority is the safety of passengers, we apologise to those whose travel is being affected by today's weather.
