Here's What The Chase Headley Trade Means For The New York Yankees

Here's What The Chase Headley Trade Means For The New York Yankees

The Padres acquired Headley and righthander Bryan Mitchell from the Yankees on Tuesday in exchange for outfielder Jabari Blash. Again, this is more about the Yankees cutting payroll. That could get Todd Frazier back for them, perhaps.

The trade was primarily a salary dump for the Yankees, and it opens up another potential spot for top prospect Gleyber Torres to enter the starting lineup in 2018.

Headley was due $13 million in 2018, the final season of a four-year, $52 million contract, a figure the Yankees considered too much considering his level of production.

The Yankees are in the midst of revamping their infield after dealing second baseman Starlin Castro to the Miami Marlins in the Giancarlo Stanton trade on Monday. Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner is intent on getting under the $197 million tax threshold next year, and NY still may attempt to re-sign left-hander CC Sabathia or add another starting pitcher.

Headley, a third baseman, hit.273/.352/.406 for the Yankees a year ago.

While those are worrisome numbers, Mitchell will be assisted by playing in the pitcher-friendly park in San Diego rather than Yankee Stadium, a hitter's dream.

Headley played in San Diego from 2007 to midway through the 2014 season.

Blash has appeared in 99 games over the last two seasons, his first two as a big leaguer. Mitchell, who is out of options, is not yet eligible for salary arbitration. He was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the Rule 5 draft in 2010 and immediately was included in a trade to the San Diego Padres as the player to be named later in the Drew Pomeranz deal. "We kind of compare that to the free-agent market, and probably more intrigued in terms of the upside". He hit.273 with 12 homers and 61 RBI last season for the Bronx Bombers.
