Missing North Carolina girl presumed dead, authorities say

Earl Kimrey of Jacksonville was arrested late Friday and was being held at the Onslow County Detention Center on a $1 million bond in the disappearance of 3-year-old Mariah Woods, deputies said.

Earlier Saturday, officials said that the live-in boyfriend of Mariah Woods' mother was charged in connection with the case.

Kimrey is charged with concealing death, obstruction of justice, second degree burglary, felony larceny and posession of stolen property.

Earl Kimrey, 32, was taken into custody by sheriff's investigators Friday.

Records reportedly show that Kimrey broke into a home and stole two dressers around the time Woods disappeared, according to WNCN. Jetta Long revealed that her daughter was born with a shortened leg, so she said she understood how her little girl could have been mistaken for the missing toddler.

Onslow County deputies say they have not found Mariah Woods' body and will continue to search the eastern North Carolina woods with hundreds of volunteers. Her body has not been found. Once they realized she was missing, the couple said they called authorities.

Arrest warrants say a man took the body of his girlfriend's 3-year-old daughter from where she died, knowing her death was not natural.

The statement did not say if Kimrey has a lawyer.

Due to evidence gathered during the course of the investigation, the Sheriff's Office said it believes Mariah is deceased. The search for Mariah entered a fifth day Friday. The search was organized by Team Adam, a program for the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children that provides on-site assistance to law enforcement agencies and families in cases of missing children, according to Onslow County Sheriff Hans Miller.

A statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation said Friday's initial search finished more quickly than anticipated because of the number of people who turned out.

They were sent straight to the FBI's base in Quantico, Virginia, for testing on Wednesday afternoon.

"Allow us to review it to determine if it is of investigative value", FBI agent Stanley Meador said.

The FBI estimates that 600 people turned out to join the search for a missing North Carolina child, and some had to be turned away.
