Saudi king to Trump: Jerusalem embassy move a 'dangerous step'

"The Kingdom remains committed to a settlement based on the Arab peace initiative of 2002, including East Jerusalem as the capital of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders", Saudi Ambassador to the United States Prince Khalid bin Salman stated.

The US president's phone calls to the Middle East leaders came as vociferous Arab and opposition to any possible US recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital continued to mount, and as European leaders expressed concern about harm to Israeli-Palestinian peace efforts.

He said such a move is going to provoke Muslims around the world because of the status of Jerusalem for Muslims as the location of Al- Aqsa Mosque, the Muslim's first Qibla.

The MOFA went on convey that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would view the step, if taken, as a contradiction to immutable worldwide resolutions that emphasize the rights of the Palestinian People to Jerusalem.

It insisted that the U.S. take into consideration the grave and negative consequences of the step to avoid harming its ability to continue efforts to achieve a just solution for the Palestinian cause in line with the relevant worldwide references and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Jordan's King Abdallah and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, who all received phone calls from Trump on Tuesday, joined a mounting chorus of voices saying that any unilateral United States move on Jerusalem could unleash turmoil.

Trump's call to the Saudi monarch was one of a number he made to Middle East leaders on Tuesday to signal the U.S. embassy move to the holy city would go ahead.

The plan would see Saudi Arabia play a larger role in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by helping Palestinians relocate to other countries as refugees rather than remaining in their ancestral lands.

"A way must be found through negotiations to resolve the status of Jerusalem as the future capital of both states", Mogherini said, stressing the EU's support for unlocking meaningful peace talks.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Turkey may cut diplomatic ties with Israel if Washington goes ahead with the move.

Abbas' spokesman told Reuters the PA president also spoke with Pope Francis and French President Emmanuel Macron and "urged them to intervene to prevent" the embassy move.
