'Terrorist' explosion in Manhattan injures 4; suspect named

'Terrorist' explosion in Manhattan injures 4; suspect named

It is believed the explosive did not detonate as planned. A short piece of metal pipe was packed with low intensity explosive material and a handful of screws meant to cause injury.

The scene of a pipe bomb blast beneath the Port Authority Bus Terminal has been cordoned off on December 11, 2017. One of those injured was the suspect, the Associated Press reported.

"I was exiting the Port Authority and the National Guard was running towards something shouting "Go, Go, Go", commuter Keith Woodfin tweeted, according to New York Daily News.

Ullah was taken into custody and transported to Bellevue Hospital where he was treated for severe burns to his hands and abdomen. "This is NY and the reality is that we are a target for many who would like to make a statement against democracy, against freedom", he said.

"New York continues to remain the focus of interest".

Mr Ullah has, up to now, also held a clean record in the United States, with just traffic violations cited by the police. "These are not the actions that we expect from our justice system, and we hope to see better in the days and weeks to come".

At least four people total also suffered non-life threatening injuries such as ringing in ears, headaches, and scrapes according to police officials.

He said disruptions to the train and bus services had been restored.

"I was going through the turnstile", he said. "Let us get back to work". "We can't be scared".

"The A, C and E line are being evacuated at this time", the NYPD had said, adding that the information is preliminary.

Police say the explosion happened in an underground passageway under 42nd Street between 7th and 8th avenues.

Asked by a reporter if the suspect had any connections to ISIS, O'Neill said the man "made statements", but declined to be more specific.

While there is no evidence that Ullah had any contact with ISIS or other extremist groups, he told investigators he had been inspired by the group's online propaganda, a senior official told NBC.

New York City has been a target of multiple terrorists attacks and attempts starting the bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993; the worst of them was the 9/11 attacks.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo described the bomb as "an effectively low-tech device" and said he was grateful the only injuries were minor.

"I think it's wonderful they haven't shut it down".

Ullah held a Taxi & Limousine Commission license from March 2012 to March 2015, after which the license was not renewed, TLC spokesman Allan Fromberg said.

Sanders followed up during the afternoon White House press briefing to call the incident terrorism and praise responders on the scenes.

Following Monday's attack, commuters told of mass chaos and a "stampede" following the explosion as NY commuters fled in terror through the smoky passageway. We're a savvy people.
