Thursday in CE: Apple Confirms iPhones Slow Down with Older Batteries

Apple on Thursday confirmed what some conspiracy theorists suspected, that it intentionally slows performance of older iPhones as batteries weaken from age. He also believes - like many other users - that it's just a ploy by Apple to get folks to buy the newest iPhone.

They were reacting to Apple's statement on Wednesday - in response to a claim by an app company at the beginning of this week - that it had introduced a software feature past year to prevent phones from unexpectedly shutting down.

A recent blog post from processor benchmarking company Geekbench, which showed that older phones operate faster if they are using older software versions, amplified these concerns.

Apple customers have complained of slower working phones for a while.

But Alphr says Apple's claims are correct as lithium-ion batteries can deteriorate over time.

Shaw's Freedom (TSX:SJR.B) - which has its network primarily in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia - wasn't able to carry the Apple 8s and newer iPhone X until this month.

Ms Karissa Chua, a consumer electronics consultant at Euromonitor International, said it was common for the battery, speed and performance of all smartphones to degenerate over time with every update to the operating system and apps.

Now the company admits they're the ones behind it. Wear level was somewhere around 20% on my old battery.

"The solution should not be at the expense of the user's experience, which might be affected if the phone slows down".

IPhone 6 and 6S users had similar issues past year, says Alphr, before Apple rectified the "widespread problem" by releasing the speed-limiting software update. The shutdown protection's now been extended to the iPhone 7 range too.

Once word of Poole's test results began to spread, Apple was effectively forced to issue a statement on the matter. Check your Geekbench scores and see what you get if your phone is still slow!

Apple said it changed its software past year for the iPhone 6, 6S and SE to "smooth out the instantaneous peaks only when needed".

Apple insists the updates were made with a different goal in mind: It said the performance of lithium-ion batteries degrades over time, which can sometimes cause phones to suddenly shut down in order to protect their components.

Apple apparently rolled out an update to devices that limits performance when battery life starts to dwindle, according to Geekbench, because iPhone 6 devices in particular were shutting down unexpectedly even when the user had taken advantage of its battery replacement programme.
