U.S. vetoes United Nations resolution against Trump's Jerusalem move

U.S. vetoes United Nations resolution against Trump's Jerusalem move

A resolution denying that Jerusalem is Israel's capital would have a strong optical impact, just as the USA vetoing a measure supported by 14 other states did. In deference to the principle that Jerusalem's status be determined in the final stages of negotiations - which have been frozen since 2014 - all countries have situated their embassies in Tel Aviv, a roughly 45-minute drive from Jerusalem.

The Trump administration knew precisely who the measure was targeting, and fired back quickly.

"We will not accept the a mediator in the peace process and this American position must be met with several measures", he said, denouncing the USA for adopting "a Zionist approach".

It's extremely rare for the UN Security Council to pass measures targeting the USA, let alone ones that require the United States to veto the resolution itself rather than assuming one of its allies would do so instead.

The question of how the city will be divided up - or if it will be divided up at all - will be arguably the most important issue if, or when, peace talks between the two sides resume. It countered an worldwide consensus that Jerusalem's status should be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, who claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

Permanent observer of Palestine to the United Nations Riyad Mansour speaks during a Security Council meeting concerning the situation in the Middle East involving Israel and Palestine, at United Nations headquarters, December 18, 2017, in New York City.

Israel seized eastern Jerusalem in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war and has declared the entire city to be its capital.

Trump's language during his speech wasn't quite as inflammatory as it could've been. But the Palestinians insist East Jerusalem should be the capital of their future independent state.

President Trump, keeping a campaign promise, announced two weeks ago that the United States considers Jerusalem the capital of Israel and that it would eventually relocate its embassy there from Tel Aviv.

He reiterated that he wants East Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Palestine, pledging to preserve it as an open city for all religions. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement and other groups organized mass protests while its rival, the Gaza-based Islamic militant group Hamas, has called for a third violent uprising against Israel. And it would have called for intensified and accelerated global and regional efforts to achieve Middle East peace.

"We will take legal, political and diplomatic actions against Trump's announcement of Jerusalem", Abbas said, highlighting that a special committee will be formed to look into relevant United Nations resolutions and formulate new ones.

In a recorded video statement after the veto, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu likened Haley to a Maccabi, one of the ancient Jewish warriors now being venerated as part of the Jewish holiday of Chanukah. "On Hanukkah, you spoke like a Maccabee". You dispel the darkness.

Israeli leaders praised US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley's raising her hand opposing the draft resolution. "Truth defeated lies. Thank you, President Trump".
