United Kingdom woman jailed for 3 years in Egypt for carrying painkillers

United Kingdom woman jailed for 3 years in Egypt for carrying painkillers

A British woman has been jailed for three years in Egypt after accidentally confessing to smuggling drugs.

Laura Plummer, 33, was arrested on October 9 at Hurghada International Airport on the Red Sea after police reportedly found 290 tablets of tramadol in her suitcase.

Plummer had claimed the painkiller, legal in the United Kingdom but banned in Egypt, was for her Egyptian partner, to treat his back pain.

Her lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment.

Plummer's trial started in the town of Safaga on Monday with what her lawyers described as a mistaken confession.

He added: "The evidence is pretty clear that she didn't know the drug was banned and she was taking it out there to help her boyfriend, who has come up with the evidence that he does suffer from a severe back problem".

"It will take a while and she has to go back to the prison", said Plummer's mother, Roberta Synclair.

While the pills are legal in some countries and throughout the United Kingdom with a prescription, they're illegal in Egypt, according to the BBC.

Rachel said: "She's sleep deprived, she's visibly nervous and upset".

"She's a normal, nice person".

The Sun reports that Plummer said she's been "daft" by putting the pain pills in her suitcase before travelling. "I'm even more anxious now she's in actual prison with real criminals".

The 33-year-old shop worker became so upset that the judge was forced to adjourn the hearing, her sister Rachel has said.

"We're also devastated by the news that it's been able to carry on this far and the fact that she's been sentenced for three years, just for being kind, it's a disgrace". She will probably be dead if she has to stay in there for three years. "She doesn't deserve that".

But her family has been told that she could face up to 25 years in jail or even death penalty.

They said she did not try to hide the medication and initially thought it was a joke when she was pulled up by officials.

The Plummers' local member of parliament, Karl Turner, said Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt had raised her case with Egyptian authorities.
