Western Wall Train Station to Be Named after President Trump

Western Wall Train Station to Be Named after President Trump

Earlier this month, Trump recognized the city as Israel's capital, a move that was widely condemned around the world but welcomed in Israel.

Israel's Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz on Wednesday announced that a train station set to be built adjacent to Jerusalem's Western Wall and will be named after United States President Donald Trump.

Katz approved construction plans for the train on Tuesday, The Jerusalem Post reported.

In May, Trump became the first sitting U.S. president to visit the Western Wall when he visited the site during a tour of several Middle East countries.

But it would run close to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, where tradition holds that Jesus was crucified and buried, and a contested holy site known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary.

Israel's finance minister called extending the Jerusalem express line all the way to the wall the "most important national project in the Transportation Ministry", said the paper.

Though Trump said he was merely recognizing reality and not prejudging negotiations on the future borders of the city, Palestinians saw the move as siding with Israel on the most sensitive issue in the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Jerusalem was restored as the de facto capital of Israel after the Jewish people regained control of the city in 1967, for the first time in roughly 2,000 years.

Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel on December 6 led to nearly unanimous support from across the Israeli political spectrum but sparked waves of protests across the world.

Ambassador Jado revealed the importance of the Arab League's statement at its emergency session on Trump's announcement of the transfer of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, referring to the Arab League's decision to cut the relationships between Arab countries and any country that moves its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

She added: "What we are doing is returning our embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, where we had it for many years".

Israel's army regularly acts against media it accuses of encouraging young Palestinians to take up arms against Israeli forces in the West Bank.
