Apple will not kill the iPhone X this year

Apple will not kill the iPhone X this year

Sales of the pricey new iPhone X are reportedly much lower than Apple expected, so the company has slashed production volumes for the coming months.

Recent reports stated that when Apple reveals its new iPhones later this year, it will end production of the iPhone X.

Not only will Apple's decision to cut iPhone X production have an obvious impact on its earnings and sales outlook, but, according to this morning's report, it may also "have a domino effect" on the company's various supply chain partners, as well, which could even result in a massive liability for the tech giant.

In the meantime, a DigiTimes report Kuo's notes and claims that Apple is in plans to bring four new iPhone models, with two sporting LCD panels in sizes around 5.7- to 5.8-inch and 6.0- to 6.1-inch. However, it is highly presumable that the iPhone maker is not favouring any upgrade when it comes to the technology powering the TrueDepth system on the original iPhone X model.

The new phones have not been given official titles yet, but the largest of the three; the 6.5 inch, is being dubbed as the iPhone X Plus by some. The handset, which doesn't yet have a name, will have the same True Depth sensors for Face ID and Animoji as the iPhone X, and it will also lack a home button. If Apple does in fact launch a second-generation iPhone SE, Kuo doesn't think it will have too many outward changes compared to the current model. Instead of using a steel frame, Apple would switch to an aluminum chassis for the LCD iPhone. The 2018 iPhone X will come with a 2800mAh battery, versus the 2715mAh from previous year.

Several analysts have lowered their estimates for iPhone X shipments in the past few weeks, citing high price of the device among other factors, with at least three downgrading their rating on the stock.

'Our survey work indicates iPhone X sales were strong during the December quarter but sales appear slower in January, more in line with normal seasonal trends, ' they wrote in a note. Presumably, Apple would continue to offer the 4.7-inch iPhone 8, but that would feature older components.

Reuters could not immediately reach Apple's us headquarters for comment outside regular business hours.
