Facebook is working on a new section for local news

The immensely popular social network for millennials and users of all ages, Facebook is on a drive to ease out the availability of local news from vetted sources for its user base. Local news publishers will be approved by Facebook's News Partnerships team.

Social media giant Facebook has launched a new product called "Today in" that aims to push local news and information to those with a profile on the platform. From what has been revealed, Facebook is now conducting the test in a handful of cities around the United States - New Orleans, Louisiana; Olympia, Washington; Billings, Montana; Binghamton, New York; Peoria, Illinois and Little Rock, Arkansas.

Commentators point out that the social network's reported foray into local news publishing segment comes at a time when it is looking to fix the problem of misinformation and fake news on its platform.

This features is launched after the company has faced fake news issue.

Whether the "Today In" feature will help boost local media remains to be seen. The feature will be available for users through the bottom-right menu button on Facebook.

A company spokesperson was adamant in an email to Quartz that the section will be an addition to local news shared in the News Feed, likely because of publisher fears that they will be booted out of the feed.

The users will then also be able to follow the cities that they do not now live in, like childhood hometown. Publishers anxious they would have to pay to have their posts end up in the News Feed, where most users would spend their time, and thus where there is more potential for ad-revenue-generating traffic.

News specific to these communities will be directed to users by both human curators and algorithms.
