Facebook selfie helps Canadian Police to crack a murder case

Cheyenne Rose Antoine, 21, pleaded guilty this week to killing Brittney Gargol, who was found fatally injured on a road in the outskirts of the city in 2015. The body was discovered by a passerby. But investigators concluded Antoine knew her friend was not home safe, because she had strangled her to death outside of town.

The court heard how, leading up to her arrest, Antoine had "tried to kill herself with drugs" and was subsequently arrested for an unrelated matter.

Brittney Gargol, right, with her accused killer, Cheyenne Antoine, in a photo taken hours before Gargol died.

Eventually, after more grilling by investigators, Antoine confessed to the murder saying that she was drunk and became angry at Gargol. In the morning, Antoine sent a number of Facebook messages to Gargol to see if she made it home alright. The uncle corroborated the story but later admitted that his niece told him to give that account. "It shouldn't have ever happened", she said.

Authorities say that a belt was believed to be the murder weapon.

The image sees Antoine sporting a belt matching one discovered near Gargol's body. "You owe it to her".

BBC notes that Antoine comes from an abusive background growing up in the Saskatchewan care system and had even reported abuse by her foster parents a month before she committed this heinous crime.

The victim's aunt, Jennifer Gargol, told the court how her niece's death had affected the family.

As part of her plea, Antoine took responsibility for Gargol's death, but said she did not remember killing her.

"I'll never forgive myself", Antoine wrote in a statement that Watson read to the court, per the StarPhoenix.

"I am very, very sorry ... it shouldn't have ever happened".

She was arrested on suspicion of murder in March of a year ago. This accessory, probably the murder weapon, has captured the attention of the police. Could this imply a level of premeditation to the murder? Indeed, it was Facebook that helped them crack the case.

Though the prosecution crafted a strategy of damning information about Antoine from publicly available Facebook posts, mining data through personal devices and social media are on the frontier of criminal justice. Maybe you'll think twice before publically RSVPing for an event on Facebook.

The police found a picture as evidence on Facebook.
