Kerber beats Barty to claim Sydney title

Kerber beats Barty to claim Sydney title

Former world number one Angelique Kerber continued her 2018 resurgence with a 6-4 6-4 win over Ashleigh Barty in the Sydney International final on Saturday, giving herself a welcome boost ahead of next week's Australian Open.

It was Kerber's first title since the 2016 US Open and was the left-hander's second win over the 19th-ranked Barty in three meetings.

Kerber, who began previous year at the top of the rankings before finishing at No. 22, won her seventh straight match of 2018, including four singles at the Hopman Cup last week.

If Barty hopes to secure her maiden Sydney International title, she will need her forehand to be in top condition, and she will also need to come up to the net to finish off points quickly against one of the best movers on the WTA tour. It's more about me playing matches the right way and doing the right things on and off the court to try and get the results, and to be able to have that No.1 ranking is a bonus.

"I am playing wonderful tennis again and feeling just great", said Kerber. The German would ultimately take their match in three sets, cruising through the final two sets against the American.

She has Aryna Sabalenka in the first round, before a possible second match against Sydney International semi-finalist Camila Giorgi.

Kerber, who knocked out Venus Williams in her opening match in Sydney, said she was not yet back to her best form of 2016 when she won the Australian and US Opens.

However, Medvedev halted his charge with a break of serve in the 11th game before holding to love to claim his first ATP title.

"And Angie is on fire. I certainly felt like it was a pretty good level for a final".

"It's been a pleasure playing here this week and it's nice getting a bit of confidence going into our biggest tournament for us", Barty said after the match.

"I shot myself in the foot with my serving in the first and didn't give myself an opportunity to be dominant on service games", Barty said.
