Majority of Australians do not care about Australia Day celebration

And while I'm not actually that big on Australia Day, as I'm usually at work, I believe the spirit of the day matters, not the date.

Less than a quarter (23%) chose the current date from a range of options when asked what day would be best, and interestingly, many who identified the First Fleet as the reason behind January 26 for the celebration did not think it was the best date for Australia Day, however the country is evenly divided when it comes to the issue of indigenous sensibilities.

Mr Shorten on Thursday said he supported Australia Day staying on January 26, but would not sneer at indigenous Australians wanting to discuss changing the date.

Indigenous Health Minister Ken Wyatt was surprised to hear his colleague hadn't been approached about a date change by some indigenous Australians.

"Australia is a country rich with diversity and culture, and it should be celebrated on a day when everyone can come together to celebrate what makes Australia great".

The survey, conducted by The Australia Institute, quizzed 1,417 Australians about their views on Australia Day and their knowledge surrounding the national holiday. "However, only 37% agreed that the current date of Australia Day is offensive to Indigenous Australians, while 46% disagreed".

In fact, the poll found less than half of the people surveyed even knew why January 26 was chosen in the first place (it's the anniversary of the First Fleet landing in Sydney, fyi).

Just 49 per cent of respondents believed the day shouldn't be held on a date that is offensive to Indigenous people, while 36 per cent believed it shouldn't matter.

The Australia Institute's deputy director Ebony Bennett said the results show that while almost all Australians consider a national day important "most people are laid back about the date we celebrate on".

"And when we do, the day we become a republic should become Australia Day". Do you know why we celebrate Australia Day on January 26?

What's clear is that for now, nothing will change, with Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull saying this week that he was "disappointed by those who want to change the date of Australia Day".

Labor spokesperson for human services and the first Aboriginal woman elected to the federal lower house, Linda Burney, said the Labor party did not support changing the date, but Australians should spend the day reflecting on the "true history of this country".

One commercial shows a little girl giving her mum a "Happy Australia Day" card, only to have it thrown in the bin because it isn't politically correct to celebrate the date.

Triple J's Hottest 100 is arguably the best part of the day and if a date change is good enough for them, it's good enough for me.
