Mattis: Diplomacy Should Impose Reason On North Korea's Kim

U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis stressed diplomacy as the way to deal with the North Korean crisis on Friday during talks with his South Korean counterpart in Hawaii, a day after Seoul's top diplomat said a military solution would be unacceptable. Some have pointed to the intensification of sanctions against Pyongyang as being a key factor, but there is much to suggest that the main driver was the increasing threat of United States military intervention.

"The intelligence community has provided to your committee today evidence of how vessels originate in China, they turn off their transponders as they move into North Korean waters and dock at North Korean ports and they on load commodities such as coal", Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing Marshall Billingslea said at the time. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has confirmed his attendance as has United States Vice President Mike Pence. "It's an global problem that requires an worldwide solution", said Mattis.

Sources also say that South and North Korea will each receive half of the seats that have a clear view of the stage (which represent about half of the total 620 seats in the concert hall).

Each Korean country has sent their own women's hockey coach, with Sarah Murray from the South and ultimately in control of the joint team, and Pak Chol-ho from the North.

What North Korea wants from the Olympic detente, Go said, is to buy time until it perfects the technology to become a full-fledged nuclear power.

North Korea's women ice hockey athletes arrive at the South's CIQ (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine), just south of the demilitarized zone separating the two Koreas in Paju, South Korea on January 25. Furthermore, a rise in the North Korea risk might also set off financial market turbulence, yet South Korean authorities are likely to intervene effectively to maintain financial stability, added Scotiabank.

The sentiment was echoed by John Merrill, visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins University's School of Advanced International Studies. "I don't think that [the overland route] is feasible because it takes so long", the Unification Ministry official said.

One of the sources said: "The Chinese have cracked down on coal exports from North Korea so the smuggling route has developed and Russian Federation is the transit point for coal".

As North and South officials continue to iron out pre-Olympic details, the North Korean delegation to the Olympics remains to be finalized, according to a report in the Chosun Ilbo.

U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea, if forced to defend itself or its allies.
