NFL, NFLPA to investigate Panthers' concussion evaluation of Cam Newton

NFL, NFLPA to investigate Panthers' concussion evaluation of Cam Newton

Following the loss to the New Orleans Saints in the wild-card round on Sunday night, the Carolina Panthers could soon be under much scrutiny from the league for their handling of star quarterback Cam Newton, per ESPN's Kevin Seifert.

He was then taken into the medical tent but quickly came back onto the field, without having gone into the locker room, which is required after the National Football League updated the concussion protocol guidelines on December 29. They will not comment further until those conversations are completed.

He was taken to the sideline medical tent for evaluation for a concussion and cleared after missing only one play.

Newton took a hard hit in the fourth quarter in which he claimed his helmet came down over his eyes and hurt his right eye.

Panthers officials maintained Monday that Newton, following instructions from the sideline, took a knee so backup QB Derek Anderson could get warmed up.

According to Fox Sports' Chris Myers on the broadcast, Newton's visor poked him in the eye, a odd explanation following a crushing blow. Newton's hats, from the brimless hat to the "barbershop quartet" look, tend to get fans talking on social media.

According to the policy, if the protocol was not properly followed, the team is subject to discipline.

The league is now looking into the situation, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
