Packers fire long time defensive coordinator Dom Capers

Packers fire long time defensive coordinator Dom Capers

He has started all 53 regular-season games in which he has played, including being the only Green Bay offensive lineman to start every game this season.

The news of Capers' firing is also being reported by NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport.

Capers' defense hasn't finished in the top 10 since the Super Bowl season.

This is all despite the team using its first draft pick on a defensive player in each of the last six years. Sanders was sacked after the 2008 season. Besides Capers and Sanders, McCarthy also fired special teams coordinator Shawn Slocum after the 2014 season. The 67-year-old has been an assistant coach in the National Football League since 1986. He was the assistant linebackers coach for the last four seasons.

ORIGINAL STORY: A report by Adam Schefter of ESPN says that defensive coordinator Dom Capers will no longer be the defensive coordinator of the team after a nine-year tenure.

Green Bay finished 2017 ranked No. 22 in total defense. Green Bay is expected to make other changes to its defensive coaching staff as well.

If Green Bay opts to go outside the organization, the Journal-Sentinel reported that candidates may be Chicago defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, Gregg Williams of the Cleveland Browns and Steve Spagnuolo, who served as interim head coach of the New York Giants after Ben McAdoo was sacked.

According to Demovsky, in-house candidates to replace Capers could be defensive associate head coach Winston Moss, cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt Jr., safeties coach Darren Perry, and defensive line coach Mike Trgovac.
