Smartphones with in-display fingerprint sensor showcased at CES 2018

We first presented a prototype of our fingerprint scanning solution at MWC Shanghai 2017 based on an ultrasonic sensor, and have remained committed to realizing our vision for future smartphones, Alex Feng, Senior Vice President of Vivo, said in a statement. Vivo is relying on the optical fingerprint sensor from Synaptics, which had announced this technology towards the end of 2017. The phone itself sports really thin bezels, and chances are that Synaptics actually partnered up with Vivo in order to show off its in-display fingerprint scanner, and Vivo created a phone for them, though it's still unclear what is the phone's name. The company said a “Tier 1” manufacturer would introduce the first phone with the tech at CES 2018. The company is set to take the stage on January 10 to unveil a smartphone that will feature under display fingerprint sensor, a technology that has been highly expected for a while now.

It will be interesting to see how the new biometric scanning technology will affect the smartphone usage and the industry trends. By launching the smartphone at CES 2018, Vivo will become the first company ever to launch a smartphone with fingerprint sensor underneath the display panel.

The use of glass will also help the manufacturer to make the phone water-proof (IP68 or beyond), as well. While rear-mounted fingerprint scanners are all well and good, there are people who just like it on the front of the smartphone.

The recent fingerprint scanning technology aims to offer users a better and a more convenient way in terms of fingerprint authentication experiences. The smartphone is said to launch in the first half of this year. The only difference I experienced was that the Vivo handset was slower - both to learn the contours of my fingerprint and to unlock once I put my thumb on the on-screen fingerprint prompt - but not so much as to be problematic. This newest fingerprint scanning technology will let fans unlock their smartphone through a one-touch fingerprint scanning technology right through the smartphone's display.
