Study Links Ibuprofen to Male Infertility

Researchers looked at 31 male participants and found that taking ibuprofen reduced production of testosterone by almost a quarter in the space of around six weeks. A growing number of studies shed light on concerning health issues that may arise from NSAIDs and ibuprofen in particular.

The good news is that the problems required multiple weeks of constant ibuprofen use, so there's no indication that handling the odd muscle ache or hangover with ibuprofen will cause problems.

Ibuprofen is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug sold without a prescription for short-term treatment of pain, inflammation from injuries, and fever. The experimental group received ibuprofen twice a day for a total of six weeks and was tested for hormone levels at two and six weeks. With testosterone and luteinizing hormones out of whack, the subjects in the trial taking the ibuprofen developed a form of "hypogonadism", which is usually prevalent in older men and is associated with male infertility and other health effects, including fatigue and depression.

Aspirin, the best-selling NSAID on the USA market, was initially linked to stomach problems but was thought to be otherwise safe. The condition arises when the body has to boost levels of testosterone because normal production in the testes has fallen.

The study is a continuation of previous research on pregnant women linking mild ibuprofen exposure in fetuses to an increased risk of inherited medical conditions, testosterone blockages, and physiological effects on the testicles of male babies.

They tracked how ibruprofen affected them, noting that the painkiller can affect your body's hormone levels. That works out to three ibuprofen tablets per day if you're taking a typical 200mg/tablet product.

Those who took the ibuprofen were more likely to have indications of testicular problems - including a condition called compensated hypogonadism that affects reproductive health - meaning men are less likely to be able to father a child. The team focused on ibuprofen and its effects on adults as further research.

Again, it's important to emphasize this was a really small study that required two weeks of constant ibuprofen use before there was any indication that something was out of the ordinary. Research released in February 2017 also found that it could increase the risk of heart attacks.

14 of them were given daily doses of Ibuprofen, which professional and amateur athletes take.

The other 17 men in the study took a placebo.

In the subjects, the condition was temporary, but study leads told the Guardian it could become a permanent problem in cases of long term overuse.
