Teacher questioning administrative pay raises removed from board meeting in handcuffs

Teacher questioning administrative pay raises removed from board meeting in handcuffs

A teacher in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, was escorted out of a school board meeting by a city marshal, handcuffed and arrested after speaking out against a pay raise for the district's superintendent.

During a school board meeting on Monday, Deyshia Hargrave brought up the issue of teacher salary and a raise that was included in a new contract for the superintendent, according members of the Vermilion Parish School Board.

"A superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, I feel like it's a slap in the face to all the teachers, cafeteria workers, and any other support staff we have", Ms Hargrave noted. It was public comment only, not a question and answer session-although board officials were answering her questions.

Hargrave later spoke a second time and asked another question, KATC said. She was then removed from the meeting by an Abbeville city marshal.

The officer, an Abbeville city marshal, demands she "stop resisting" and she states, "I am not, you just pushed me to the floor". Hargrave was arrested for resisting an officer and remaining after being forbidden, but the school system is not pressing charges, KATC reported.

After the board approved the raise, Hargrave was again recognized by the board and voiced her frustrations.

She had gone years without a raise, so she wanted to know why the superintendent was getting one. "We work very hard, with very little, to maintain the salaries we have".

A Louisiana teacher who was forcibly removed from a school board hearing in a viral video clip was booked on two crimes and bonded out of jail Tuesday morning, court documents show. During the confrontation, the teacher falls to the ground while an onlooker repeats, "What are you doing?"

Hargrave added that the raise was unwarranted, saying teachers and students have met their performance targets while class sizes have grown.

KATC said it was unclear whether the marshal was acting on his own or if the board asked him to remove Hargrave. Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.
