Trump wants to withdraw funding for International Space Station

Many of NASA's partners are not now signed on to continue supporting our space program past 2024 with the help of an Obama-era extension, and this budget proposal doesn't exactly encourage them to continue the relationship. "I think when the budget comes out folks will see what we've been asked to go do and how we think we're going to do it". A final budget to be submitted on 12 February could yield a different decision and is still subject to Congressional approval.

Nelson said ending ISS operations in 2025 "would likely decimate Florida's blossoming commercial space industry", a reference to the commercial cargo and future commercial crew launches that will take place from Cape Canaveral as well as support for ISS research.

Per budget documents seen by The Verge, at least one draft budget proposal from the White House proposes terminating USA financial support for the ISS by the year 2025 - potentially leaving NASA astronauts grounded here on our own crappy planet until the agency comes up with a way to get them somewhere else.

Astronauts Scott Tingle and Mark Vande Hei, crewmembers of the Expedition 54 aboard the International Space Station (ISS), spent about 6.5 hours outside the space station.

The International Space Station has been continuously occupied since 2000.

US President Donald Trump did sign a bill in March 2017 regarding transitioning ISS away from Nasa authority and funding, but the agency has not released information on that and has not responded to a request for comment on the matter as yet. Considering that commercial programmes from SpaceX and Boeing won't be ready to send their own astronauts to the ISS until 2019 at the earliest, and that it will only give commercial companies five years to conduct flight runs, lower-Earth space exploration looks very precarious indeed.

To compensate for the lack of space shuttles, the plan was to get private companies involved. With the end of the station's service life approaching, the White House wants NASA to turn its attention to SLS and DSG as the agency pivots to a focus on lunar exploration.

One issue some of these companies say they're facing is a perception that the ISS must be replaced by a single commercial station.

With the proposed de-funding of the ISS, Mr Trump's "America First" foreign policy doctrine may have been extended to outer space. This could be detrimental for NASA, which would cause it to have no destination for space travel. "What also is a fact is the ISS is still the only game in town that we have at the moment".
