Uber prevents police retrieving company data

Uber prevents police retrieving company data

When investigators came knocking on Uber's overseas offices with warrants, managers were trained to call a certain phone number, the report says.

Bloomberg reports Uber has used the system at least two dozen times to lock down equipment in foreign offices to shield files from police raids. Last year, the Federal Bureau of Investigation reportedly opened a criminal probe into the taxi-service company over its "Hell" program, which was used to track drivers attached to its rival, Lyft, from 2014 to 2016.

Uber also noted the tool was a common practice to remotely change passwords or lock devices in the event they were lost or stolen, according to The Guardian.

Late past year, news broke that Uber is officially under federal investigation for a program it called Greyball.

Uber said that it doesn't destroy evidence and it has let government officials walk out the door with company laptops before - it all depends if the data the authorities want is covered by legal privilege, such as correspondence between Uber and a lawyer.

We understand why Uber has to be extra careful with their data, considering that they access to the private data of millions of people across the world.

As for software like Ripley, Prey or uLocker, Uber said there's nothing secretive about it. The Quebec tax authority arrived at the ride-hailing company's local office unannounced with a warrant.

Uber's use of Greyball was recorded on video in late 2014, when Erich England, a code enforcement inspector in Portland, Ore., tried to hail an Uber auto downtown as part of a sting operation against the company.

Uber has acknowledged it used Greyball to counter regulators working with the company's opponents to entrap its drivers.

The company said it removed all Greyball tags in Portland back in April 2015 and has not used them since.

It was part of a broader program called VTOS, shorthand for 'violations of terms of service, ' that Uber says it developed to protect its service.

Uber's other known anti-regulator projects include Greyball, which was created to identify regulators and law enforcement, in order serve up a fake version of the app where drivers would constantly cancel rides. Following another raid in Paris the same week, Uber's then general counsel Salle Yoo instructed employees to install encryption software that logged off computers after 60 seconds of inactivity.
