Winds of up 80mph predicted to hit West Berkshire tonight

Winds of up 80mph predicted to hit West Berkshire tonight

The warning is valid from Tuesday, January 16 from 5:30am to 3am Wednesday, January 17.

Warnings have again been issued by the Met Office this morning as high winds and snow storms are expected to hit Yorkshire again tonight.

The Met Office has also said that some rural communities may be cut off and power cuts may occur.

"In addition roads and pavements will turn icy, increasing the chances of accidents or injuries".

All schools in the Scottish Borders and more than 120 in Northern Ireland have been shut today in the wake of heavy snow, leaving thousands of children stuck at home.

However, snow showers are now expected to continue across the whole country away from east coast until late on Friday.

Temperatures are expected to rise no higher than 1C in Hawick, Selkirk and Galashiels tomorrow and to fall to a minimum of -1C overnight. "Drive according to the conditions at all times, as surfaces could be slippery even on treated roads, particularly if we experience the winter weather that's been forecast".

The forecaster anticipates further weather warnings will be issued on Wednesday night.

Last night traffic bosses then closed parts of the motorway in Lanarkshire in both directions due to wintry conditions for a number of hours - with tailbacks stretching back for six miles.

A status yellow wind warning is also in place today for Munster, Leinster and Galway, with gusts of up to 110km an hour expected. Spells of heavy rain are likely along with the strong winds.

The warning comes as an Atlantic depression is set to bring scattered snow showers to northern parts of the country.

Through the night there will be some heavy showers which bring the risk of several centimetres of snow and risk of ice.

Road, rail and ferry services may be affected, with longer journey times and cancellations and there is also a possibility some bridges may close.

The heavy snow has been called Storm Fionn in the Republic of Ireland, where a yellow snow and ice warning remains in place until 09:00. Westerly winds will be very strong with severe gusts over Leinster, Munster and parts of Connacht but in the north winds will be fresh to strong.
