Activist Omtata in court over TV stations switch off

Acording to the government, there were unnamed media characters that were out to facilitate an illegal process -NASA swearing in - even in the presence of a State advice.

The US department of state, in a statement by Heather Nauert, its spokesperson, said it was gravely concerned by Odinga's self-inauguration as Kenya's "People's President".

If the government continues to defy the courts, it could spark a confrontation with a newly-confident judiciary, said Murithi Mutiga, senior analyst with International Crisis Group.

Kenyan opposition leader Raila Odinga, who boycotted the country's disputed election a year ago, swore himself in as the "people's president" at a mock inauguration ceremony Tuesday in protest against President Uhuru Kenyatta.

"This is clearly a slide to dictatorship". "We are becoming another African country".

Madowo says the journalists made a decision to spend the night in the newsroom for security reasons.

Clashes between Odinga supporters and security forces claimed around 100 lives during the election season.

The interior ministry said in a statement circulating on social media that broadcasting the event - described as an attempt to "subvert or overthrow" the government - "would have led to the deaths of thousands of innocent Kenyans".

The stations have remained off air despite the order by the High Court. Nearly all were killed by the police.

Both are expected to be charged with treason and unlawful assembly.

Both men played prominent roles in the mock swearing-in, flanking Odinga as he took an oath while clutching a Bible, Miguna is his trademark kufi cap and Kajwang in a judge's robe and wig. He was later freed on a 50,000 Kenyan shilling ($500) bond.

The Supreme Court infuriated Kenyatta past year when it found irregularities in the August presidential election and annulled his victory. A repeat election was held on October 26, but Odinga boycotted it because he said the electoral commission had made insufficient reforms.

Claiming the poll would not be fair, Odinga boycotted the second vote and Kenyatta won with 98 percent.

Odinga, whom the government accuses of trying to force a bloody confrontation with the authorities, gave no hint in his five-minute speech at Tuesday's rally about future actions and deflected questions on Thursday about his next move.

Opposition groups have accused the Kenyan government of violating the public's right to information about important events.

"I am not a megalomaniac".
