Apple accepts HomePod leaves white rings on wooden furniture

Apple accepts HomePod leaves white rings on wooden furniture

According to Pocket-Lint, twenty minutes of HomePod use on a "solid oak kitchen worktop treated with Danish oil" was enough to cause a white ring-shaped discoloration that has faded somewhat but not disappeared over time.

Multiple reports on Twitter and from outlets, including Wirecutter and Pocket-Lint, claim that when left on a wooden object, a HomePod can leave behind potentially permanent white rings.

When I got home, I saw a large white ring, a telltale indication that the HomePod's silicone base had messed up the finish.

HomePod links to your iPhone so you can create notes, check your messages and even handle hands-free calls, but you can only connect one phone and have to grant the entire household access. Sure, it's created to never actually been seen, but you'll know it's there, working hard for you and your wood finish, and at the end of the day, isn't that the most important thing? For now, you can just make sure to keep your HomePods away from the furniture.

It is not unusual for any speaker with a vibration-damping silicone base to leave mild marks when placed on some wooden surfaces. The company recommends users to gently wipe the surface with a soft damp or dry cloth and if the mark still persists then try the wood manufacturer's recommended cleaning process.

Apple confirmed to two outlets that HomePod can damage oiled wooden surfaces thanks to a reaction with the device's silicone base.

But, as we said earlier, that didn't work for us.

9to5Mac's Trevor Daugherty also labelled the issue "concerning". The Wirecutter also tested it on glass, granite, polyurethane-sealed wood, IKEA bookshelves, etc, and lo and behold, it saw no visible damage to those surfaces. Hence the problem can't be solved by just putting a cloth underneath it.

Given the current retail price and TechInsights' analysis, Apple is generating a profit margin of around 38 percent which is far less than some of its other products create. Daring Fireball's John Gruber writes, "Anyone who runs into this should be outraged". If you're going to be playing music on Spotify, rather than Apple Music, you may be better served by a Sonos or Google Home Max.
