British PM leads tributes on centenary of women's vote

"One of the arguments that some of these anti-suffrage campaigners put forward was that if we give British women the vote - and they would very specifically use the example of India - Indian men and women won't like it", says Dr Sumita Mukherjee from the University of Bristol.

The working-class suffrage movement is something that I am particularly interested in, as really, these are the women who the vote affected the most.

The Suffragettes were courageous women who joined together in a movement to gain the right to vote. "It would be a fitting tribute to pardon them now", said Sam Smethers, chief executive of gender equality and women's rights charity the Fawcett Society. "Convictions of Suffragettes were politically motivated and bore no relation to the acts committed", Mr. Corbyn said in a press release.

"Labour in government will both pardon the suffragettes and give an official apology for the miscarriages of justice and wider persecution they suffered".

In 1928, under the Equal Franchise Act, women in the United Kingdom were granted equal voting rights, increasing the number of eligible female voters from 8 million to 15 million.

At least the suffragists and suffragettes were united in their ultimate goal.

It was 100 years ago that women were given the right to vote for the first time - albeit dependent on them having to fulfil certain criteria, such as being older than 30 and being a property owner, or married to one.

The mark the centenary of the legislation being passed the Yorkshire Evening Post is joining forces with Amnesty International to celebrate extraordinary women in our communities.

Sylvia was horrified that Emmeline and her favourite daughter Christabel joined the white feather movement, which aimed to shame men into enlisting in the army, and instead opposed the Great War, continuing to campaign for suffrage when the WSPU changed direction during the war years. Their real enemies lay in the public figures they had to convince, people who today we view through rose-tinted spectacles.

She said: "I think it's really sad that in 2018 we have as the president of apparently the most powerful place in the world someone who has done the things that he has done and speaks the way that he does".

Asked what she would have told herself when she first entered parliament as a lawmaker in 1997 alongside only a handful of other Conservative women, she said: "I would say be yourself, don't feel you have to be a sort of stereotype of a man in order to get on in politics".

Last century's suffragettes are today's women human rights defenders. It wouldn't be right for the current government to, in effect, strike out this episode by pardoning her.

Emmeline Pankhurst, long associated with the militant campaign for the vote, however embraced this name for the organisation she had set up in Manchester three years before.

The apparent sentiment of his State of the Union address was incompatible with his frequently controversial remarks online, she said.

Some women - notably Emily Davison, who was trampled by King George V's horse at the 1913 Epsom Derby - died for their cause. She called for another look at laws.
