Drinking Hot Tea May Increase The Risk Of Cancer - Study Suggests

Participants of the research study who took hot tea consumed alcohol and smoked tobacco were found to be five times more at risk of getting oesophagal cancer than those who avoided all these. Adding drinking and smoking to the mix "considerably complicate [s] the association between tea drinking and esophageal cancer risk". They found that in people who smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol excessively, drinking hot tea regularly was linked to a higher risk of developing esophageal cancer.

The authors concluded that those who drank tea less than once a week and consumed less than 15g of of alcohol on a daily basis were far less likely to experience oesophageal cancer.

Jun Lv, lead professor behind the study, also said that, "drinking hot tea contributed to cancer only when it clustered with smoking and drinking alcohol excessively". Cancer beginning in the esophagus has a survival of only five years after the initial diagnosis.

Esophageal cancer is among the most widely diagnosed types of cancer in the United States.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer defined scalding beverages as hotter than 65 °C and warned they were "probably carcinogenic to humans".

Over 9,000 new cases of oesophageal cancer were recorded in the UK in 2015, according to Cancer Research UK. It is often caused by repeated injury to the esophagus because of smoke, alcohol, acid reflux, and possibly hot liquids as suggested by the new study.

China's esophageal cancer rate is among the highest worldwide. Exclusion criteria included previous cancer diagnosis and reduction in consumption of tea, use of alcohol, or smoking.

However, for those who did smoke and drink, the increase was fivefold. Daily tea drinkers who consumed it at a hot or burning hot temperature and smoked had a 56% higher risk of developing esophageal cancer.

"However, the results of this study should not cause people to abandon their favorite beverage", Dr. Kamminger wrote. The different disease development may be the result of different exposures and risk factors.

It'd be fair to say that for some people (including me) the drink is more of an obsession. Drinking tea is unlikely to be the biggest of their health problems.

For example, for those who drank more than 15g of alcohol a week, there were around 1.2 cancers per 1,000 people per year, rising to 1.7 per 1,000 for those who drank burning hot tea. It is better to give up on smoking/drinking.
