Evan Spiegel defends Snapchat redesign, says complaints only 'validate' the changes

Evan Spiegel defends Snapchat redesign, says complaints only 'validate' the changes

"We hope the community will enjoy it once they settle in", the firm said.

Many users suspected that the issues had to do with the new update that hasn't exactly been received well among avid users.

The update separates interactions with friends from branded and celebrity content by putting them on different pages, as well as introducing other changes.

According to impacted users, they're not able to access their Snapchat Stories; the issue appears to be hitting users in part of the US, Western Europe, and the United Kingdom, as well as other places to lesser degrees. To find your friends' stories, you will have had to swipe left, where they now sit interspersed within your direct messages.

Nic Rumsey, who set up the petition, wrote that some are using Virtual Private Network (VPN) apps in order to access the older version of the platform: "That's how annoying this update has become", he said.

Snapchat announced it in November 2017 and has been rolling it out gradually.

But so far the update appears to have proved unpopular. "Nothing feels the same". No timeframe for that fix has been provided at this time, so it's hard to say how long some users will be locked out.

"Even some of the complaints we're seeing reinforce the philosophy", Spiegel said Thursday.

"That didn't make a on of sense because people weren't focused on the way they were communicating, they were focused on the relationship with their friends". In a 60-second video, co-founder Evan Spiegel explained: "your friends aren't content, they're relationships, that's why today we're separating the social from the media". Users, in various forms, have called on Snap to revert to the previous design, including one petition that has accumulated over 1 million signatures.

According to Business Insider, "158 million people are using Snapchat every day", and the average person opens the app 18 times a day.
