Florida school shooting survivors rally at capital

This Wednesday, students from Stoneman Douglas will march on the state capitol in Tallahassee to call on Florida lawmakers to pass tighter gun laws.

"He enjoys meeting with students, and he's very passionate about the role of students in the legislative process", Betta said.

Students are also encouraged to wear orange, the color of anti-gun violence. They carried sleeping bags, pillows and luggage and hugged their parents as they loaded the bus for the 400-mile journey.

Sarah Chadwick can't vote because she is only 16 years old.

In one bus, as students were strategizing talking points for legislators - organizers of the "March for Our Lives" protest noticed they had reached a fundraising milestone for their March 24th event. "The goal might just be to get the ball rolling".

"I ask that we keep this bill in the conversation about the solution to combat mass shootings alive", McGhee said. "This could be a life mission for some of these kids".

Halem, a 19-year-old college freshman, worked with Cruz at the Dollar Tree in Parkland and says they bonded over enthusiasm for firearms.

The couple said they are inspired by the "courage and eloquence" of the survivors-turned-activists from the Parkland school. It was one of more than 20 vigils organized by the Florida PTA.

"I just want you to understand that we are moving as quickly as the system allows, with the urgency that is deserving of the emotion and the concern that I hope that you understand that - I speak for myself - that I feel", he said, according to CNN.

Amanda Montgomery and her two sons were also at the vigil. "That's why we're here is to do something and to support and hopefully send a message", she said. "Because that's what we all have at the end of the day".

UPDATE 12:58 p.m.: Thousands of students and supporters congregated in a plaza at the state Capitol to call for stronger gun control measures, including students who survived last week's massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School and hundreds of college students who marched from Florida State University and Florida A&M University.

Unlike many other students, however, he still disagrees with a ban on AR-15s or any other weapon. The distance between the schools is about 11 miles (17 kilometers).
