Heroic GOP Doctors Treated Injured Victims at the Scene of Amtrak Crash

"I was standing and with a cup of coffee and I actually crushed the cup when I staggered back a bit", Rutherford said after the collision. No lawmakers were believed injured.

Rep. James Comer of Kentucky says lawmakers, spouses and aides had been on the train for about two hours when the crash occurred. "But we quickly saw that there was a truck that had been hit - a garbage truck", Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH told CNN's "New Day" Thursday. (Zack Wajsgras/The Daily Progress via AP) The railroad crossing arm is seen lowered next to the scene of where an Amtrak train carrying multiple Republican lawmakers crashed into a garbage truck in Crozet, Va., on Wednesday, Jan. 31, 2018.

Madeline Curott, Albemarle County police spokeswoman, said authorities had received a call "about a fast train hitting a truck".

A total of six people were hospitalized, and no members of Congress or their staffers were seriously injured, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said.

"I am safe and was not on board the train in West Virginia". He said he expects some lawmakers will experience some aches and pains. The lawmakers planned to get on buses in Charlottesville and resume their trip, he said.

There were no major injuries on the train, but one Minnesota Congressman did go to the hospital for concussion symptoms, and there were some minor cuts and bruises.

"It is premature to offer specific comment about this incident, however, it is clear that accidents at rail crossings nationwide are far too common", Amtrak said in a statement.

President Trump is scheduled to travel to West Virginia on Air Force One for the retreat Thursday. "Today's incident was a awful tragedy". The train struck the garbage vehicle, which was carrying three people, on the tracks in Crozet, Virginia, about 40 miles west of Charlottesville, around 11:20 a.m. after departing Washington.

She didn't say the name of the victim, but she did say one of her friends knew him.

"They were busy trying to get out, and they managed to get out on their own", Cole said.

An investigation team from the National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the cause of the crash.

One GOP source said members "hit the deck".

Five people on the train were taken to hospitals, Amtrak said. He said officials at the company, which has been in business for more than three decades, have been cooperative. Bill Cassidy, who are both physicians, also helped tend to the injured.

Other doctor-lawmakers who assisted included Reps. Jeff Flake of Arizona and Rep. Brad Wenstrup of OH, helped carry one truck passenger several hundred yards to an ambulance.

Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Cabinet members are expected to join the congressional Republicans for a series of meetings concerning immigration, infrastructure, and foreign policy, and the coming midterm elections.

The retreat will still take place this weekend, according to the Congressional Institute, the organization that arranges the event.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone that has been affected by this incident".
