Led Coalition Responds With Airstrikes to Pro-Regime Attacks in Syria

According to the US -led alliance, there were some coalition troops embedded with the Kurdish-Arab SDF alliance when the attack took place.

Russian Federation and Syria both issued official statements immediately after the encounter accusing the United States of being in the nation illegally, and claiming the us military action was taken in support of terrorists.

Syrian state news outlet SANA said those killed were primarily battling the Islamic State, although it admitted an attack against the SDF took place. The American officials added that the assault was carried out using mortars, multiple-launch rocket systems, heavy artillery which were all backed up by more than 500 soldiers from the pro-government faction.

The official said the strikes were in self-defense after the pro-government forces began firing artillery and tank rounds at the SDF.

SDF forces responded with artillery and called in USA air strikes.

The overnight strikes killed an estimated 100 pro-government fighters near the Euphrates river.

The coalition said the attack took place in Khusham in the Middle Euphrates River Valley, five miles east of the agreed-on "de-confliction" line created to separate Russian-backed regime troops and US-backed forces in Syria. A year later, Russian Federation joined the fighting in support of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government.

Regime forces were likely attempting to take an oilfield near Khusham.

"The incident once again demonstrated that the true aim of continued illegal deployment of USA forces on the Syrian territory is no longer fighting the IS global terrorist group, but seizure and retention of economic assets which belong to Syria", it said. A source from the Pentagon said that there were mercenaries that were deployed in the area from Moscow and who died in the attack.

The official said about 100 pro-government forces were killed in the counterattack.

One official said that assessment is based on information obtained from monitoring communications in the area and from drone surveillance.

Asked whether the U.S. military was stumbling into Syria's broader conflict, Mattis said: "No".

The statements come hours after coalition admitted to having made several attacks on positions of forces loyal to Syrian government in response to an "unprovoked attack" against FDS offices.

According to Igor Girkin, an ex-commander of Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, two tactical units of the Wagner private military group had been hit by the US strikes on February 7. They agreed not to attack Coalition forces.

"It was self-defense. Obviously, we are not getting engaged in the Syrian civil war", Mattis said. The US-led coalition said in a statement that "it remains determined to focus on the struggle against the" Islamic State "in the Euphrates Valley, but has a right to self-defense". The Syrian army is supported by Iranian-backed militias, Lebanese resistance Shitte group Hezbollah and Russian forces and contractors.

Kurdish and Arab fighters from the force have led the campaign to defeat IS in Syria, capturing the group's stronghold of Raqqa in October.

As a result, 25 members of the pro-government unit were injured.

A US Navy F/A-18 shot down a Syrian regime Su-22 jet last June that had attacked US-backed forces on the ground.
