Mauricio Pochettino: Lucas Moura has to earn Tottenham place

Mauricio Pochettino: Lucas Moura has to earn Tottenham place

Lucas could make his debut against Liverpool on Sunday and given he has not featured for PSG in this season's Champions League, he is also eligible when Tottenham face Juventus later this month.

Spurs landed the jet-heeled Brazilian winger from Paris Saint-Germain on transfer deadline day for around £25m.

Indeed Lucas has made just six substitute appearances for PSG this term, despite scoring 19 goals in all competitions for the club last season.

It was explained in Brazil that a chat with Mauricio Pochettino was enough to convince Lucas that Tottenham is the club for him, and he'll arrive on a permanent deal. Of course, Lucas Moura is a name that for our fans is an exciting name.

"He is an experienced player, with a lot of experience at a big club like Paris Saint-Germain". But it is different to if you sign Neymar or Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Foyth was unlikely to play in the Champions League knockout out stages anyway, but Pochettino still said that leaving him out of the squad has been a very painful decision.

"I want to play to help the team". For us it's very helpful to have him.

"He's fast and he can link with the team perfectly".

The gaffer was slightly surprised to see his squad score within 11 seconds of kick off, but said the players deserve a lot of credit for managing the game thereafter, a massive responsibility against such a capable offensive side.

The club announced his signing with a clever video involving a handshake with former PSG team-mate Serge Aurier.

"I am happy with the evolution, and I am sure it is not too much time for them to start competing in games", the Argentinian said.

"I think he's going to make the effort to adapt himself with his quality in our philosophy and we are going to adapt our quality a bit too".

After so long at PSG, the London club will be hopeful a new challenge can spark Lucas' career back to life.

"The level was fantastic and we played against a great team in Manchester United and now we need to rest and prepare for the next game".

"Hopefully he can fit right in and when he gets an opportunity, he takes it".
