Pak terrorist escapes, 2 cops killed in firing at Srinagar hospital

A Pakistani militant, Naveed Jat who was arrested in 2014 managed to escape after militants attacked the police party escorting him for a medical check-up, police said. He is believed to have met Ajmal Kasab in a training camp in Pakistan before heading for Kashmir to give impetus to terrorist activities.

Jammu and Kashmir Government on Wednesday ordered investigation in terrorist attack in a hospital in Srinagar.

Babar, along with other policemen were escorting an incarcerated Lashkar-e-Toiba militant to a Shri Maharaja Hari Singh hospital when militants attacked them on Tuesday and managed to flee with the inmate. "Naveed himself snatched the weapon of one of the policeman and opened fire". An eyewitness said that Jatt stumbled but his accomplices picked him and ran away.

The terrorists then open fired and attempted to escape from the hospital. "Then there was commotion", he said. They killed two Jammu and Kashmir policemen.

Police said the cops did not retaliate fearing public casualties. One died on the spot.

J&K police had earlier sought permission to shift Jutt to a high-security prison outside the Valley, but court didn't acquiesce.

Veeri, in his statement in the House, said the concerns of the members over the attack are genuine. They were later turned back to Central jail. Abdullah had escaped from SMHS premises in February 2000.

"Naveed was arrested in south Kashmir's Kulgam in June 2014". The militant who escaped from the custody of the police has been identified as Abu Hanzulla.

A red alert warning has been sounded in Srinagar. "It was a well planned attack", the official said adding militants had prior information about movement of prisoners. During that time, he met Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Sayed and Zaki-ul-Rahman Lakhvi, who were regular visitors to the area. CCTV footage obtained from the hospital, however, could not provide any clues to the identity of the terrorists, the police said. Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) South Kashmir S P Pani told The Indian Express that Jat "was involved in three murder cases in 2013 in Pulwama and was facing trial in a number of cases across Kashmir".

Meanwhile, wreath laying ceremony of Head-Constable Mushtaq Ahmad resident of Dildar Karnah and Constable Babar Ahmad Khan resident of Shangus Achabal was held at PCR Srinagar.
