Trump holds off on new Russian Federation sanctions By

He emphasized that the new list comes even as Washington expects Moscow to cooperate on dealing with North Korea's nuclear and missile tests and the Iranian nuclear issue.

President of the European Jewish Congress Viatcheslav Moshe Kantor was among 96 business-people and 114 senior political figures allegedly close to the Kremlin, according to a report released by the US Treasury Department this week.

The Treasury Department submitted the list to Congress to comply with the Countering America's Adversaries through Sanctions Act of 2017, but the copy-paste nature of the list suggests that the Trump administration did not take its charge very seriously. "I don't think in any way we are slow-walking the report delivered last night, and we look forward to discussing [it] with you in a classified setting".

Earlier, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said the legislation itself is "serving as a deterrent" and there's no immediate need to impose any actual sanctions. "Its goal is to create a halo of uncertainty in the eyes of the third parties around the people it designates", Vercueil told Sputnik. "We want to build long-term, stable ties (with the US) based on worldwide law".

He told DailyMail there would be new pressure from Congress to impose sanctions. "We ... call on the administration to sanction the Russian oligarchs".

"We know what we want".

In advance of the list's publication, the Kremlin had indicated Russian Federation viewed the registry - and any additional sanctions - as an attempt by the influence Russia's presidential elections in March, when Putin is all but guaranteed re-election to a fourth term. Trump and Russian officials have denied the allegations of any such collusion. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., the ranking member on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said he would "conduct rigorous oversight to ensure that the Russian government's ability to conduct this trade is significantly impeded".

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who came to prominence thanks to his investigations into official corruption, tweeted on Tuesday that he was "glad that these (people) have been officially recognized on the global level as crooks and thieves". Bob Corker, R-Tenn., said in a statement Tuesday.

RBK said it was impossible to prove exactly how the USA list had affected the wealthy Russians, some of whom experienced an upturn in their fortunes; Alisher Usmanov, who owns a large stake in Arsenal football club, was worth $16m more after its publication, according to the newspaper.

Eugene Kaspersky, who according to Forbes started his own anti-virus company - which USA lawmakers have blasted as a security threat - disputed being included on an "oligarchs" list.

"It can be seen as a silent support of Putin".

The Treasury Department released the list of powerful Russians and oligarchs worth more than $1 billion on Monday, shortly before a midnight deadline.

Since 2014, eastern German politicians have repeatedly insisted on a relaxation of the economic sanctions against Russian Federation.

The adoption of worldwide economic sanctions against a state or individuals has become a tool frequently used by global bodies in recent years.

The list included, in particular, Putin's press secretary Dmitry Peskov, head of the presidential administration Anton Vayno, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
