Unlicensed Doctor Infects 40 People With HIV, Including Children

A fake doctor, who treated poor villagers with coughs and colds, has infected 21 patients with HIV by using contaminated syringes and needles.

Police in Uttar Pradesh state's Unnao district filed a complaint against Rajendra Yadav, who fled the region in anticipation of arrest, the district's chief medical officer S.P. Choudhary told dpa on the phone.

The villagers said they rarely saw Yadav changing the needles. Upon investigation, the committee came to know that all the reported cases of HIV had a common thread.

Since India is plagued by a shortage of real doctors, the Associated Press reports that millions of poor people seek out fake doctors like Yadav for cheap treatment.

India had 2.1 million people living with HIV at the end of 2016, according to UNAIDS.

Five of those infected were children, mostly under the age of 12 years. India has enrolled a 20 percent yearly decrease in new contaminations in the course of recent years, as indicated by the report.

It was reported that Yadav would visit patients at their homes and give injections for nearly all ailments for meagre payments. Villagers complained that he would give injections for nearly all ailments for meagre payments, Choudhury said.

According to a health camp report from November previous year at least 40 positive cases have been reported from Unnao.

"An investigation showed that nearly all of them had taken injections from one person", Choudhury said.

"This was an important lead". Some reports, however, said almost 40 people were infected with the disease.

"The patients had informed health officials that they developed the condition after being injected by the quack, who used a single syringe to inject all his patients", the letter, a copy of which is with the Hindustan Times, said.

"Villagers are ignorant about hygiene", he explained.

The transmission of HIV through infected syringes, especially among drug users, has been on the increase, despite efforts by the Indian government to control such cases.

It debilitates the body's immune system, making it vulnerable to different diseases.
