Which diet will work for you: Low-carb or low-fat?

Which diet will work for you: Low-carb or low-fat?

"Maybe we shouldn't be asking wha'ts the best diet, but what's the best diet for whom?" he added. The study was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

"In this 12-month weight loss diet study, there was no significant difference in weight change between a healthy low-fat diet vs a healthy low-carbohydrate diet, and neither genotype pattern nor baseline insulin secretion was associated with the dietary effects on weight loss", the study found.

At the end of the 12 months, those on a low-fat diet reported a daily average fat intake of 57 grams; those on low-carb ingested about 132 grams of carbohydrates per day.

How many conversations have you had with your friends debating what the best way to lose weight is: to eat a low-fat diet or a low-carbohydrate diet? By the end of that year, about 20 per cent of participants had dropped out of the study, due to outside circumstances, Gardner noted. It was a large and expensive trial, carried out on more than 600 people with $8 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health, the Nutrition Science Initiative and other groups.

Although it would seem that one group has to be wrong, a new study suggests that the battle between low-fat and low-carb diets is actually a draw - so both sides are right.

Each group was instructed to maintain their diet for one year.

Researchers at Stanford University found that overweight adults who followed a low-fat or low-carbohydrate diet tailored to their genetic predisposition and biological makeup weren't any more successful at shedding pounds than the groups that followed the same two diets, but without the customization for these predispositions.

The participants were encouraged to meet the federal guidelines for physical activity but did not generally increase their exercise level. The volunteers got 22 hourlong classes with dietitians on healthy low-fat diets (eat less oils, fatty meats, full-fat dairy, and nuts) or low-carb ones (reduce cereals, grains, rice, starchy vegetables, and legumes), as well as on the dangers of eating mindlessly.

Both groups achieved a clinically important weight loss of approximately 5% of body weight.

Some individuals lost far more ― up to 60 pounds, while some gained 20.

Participants were also encouraged to cook more for themselves at home, eat more with their families, and avoid snacking in front of the TV or in the auto.

"We made sure to tell everybody, regardless of which diet they were on, to go to the farmer's market, and don't buy processed convenience food". This well-conducted study suggests that both can work well, so long as people stick to them, eat less overall, and eat a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables and little sugar or refined grain. That was the case for 97 of the 180 people with the low-carb genotype. "We know weight loss is tough and sustained weight loss is even tougher". After one year the results are in and it's a draw. But blood type diets have also been shown to be of dubious use.

Gardner said it is not that calories do not matter. They also cut their daily caloric intake by about 500 calories. The point is that they did this by focusing on nutritious whole foods that satisfied their hunger.

The researchers speculated that genes involved in how carbohydrates and fat are metabolised, as well as the production of insulin (the hormone that regulates blood sugar), would impact the success of the diets. What really matters is your relationship to food going forward.
