World Rugby says TMO wrong to rule out Wales try vs England

Wales head coach Warren Gatland described television match official Glenn Newman's first-half call as "a bad mistake" after full-back Anscombe appeared to get his hand on the ball a split-second ahead of England defender Anthony Watson.

Gareth Anscombe has revealed "I thought that I got it down" after reliving the controversial non-try that left Wales crestfallen at Twickenham.

This time they have blamed New Zealander Newman, who was not due to officiate in any more Six Nations games, for failing to award Wales a score.

"Wales should have been awarded a try as the Wales player grounded the ball", a World Rugby spokesman said yesterday.

England coach Eddie Jones said World Rugby shouldn't have acknowledged the TMO's error.

"I know Warren Gatland has spoken to Alain Rolland and they've confirmed that the TMO made a mistake".

There is no longer any mention of "downward pressure" in the law book, just that the attacking player is "first to ground the ball in the opponents' in-goal".

World Rugby admit Wales try at Twickenham should have counted despite Eddie Jones' pleas

"It's happened. It's disappointing that it happens in professional sport but we focus on the next two weeks and getting ourselves ready for Ireland".

Howley insisted, however, that Wales could still have won the game regardless of Newman's ruling.

"There was plenty of time after that decision". So it's been nice to have a look at those two boys and they'll be options to look at in the June series to take them on tour, as we've done consistently where we look to take a couple of apprentices and keep adding to the squad.

And Wales could be strengthened for their Lansdowne Road meeting with Ireland next week by the return of several senior players.

Anscombe was at the heart of Wales' best moments, particularly when he switched to fly-half for the final 25 minutes and kept his team playing front-foot rugby.

"Taulupe is back to rugby this week. The game's done and dusted, so we've got to trust the referees and respect their integrity". "If you only lose one game, the past has shown you can still go on and win the championship".

"He has not made a commitment saying I will only play for England, I am sure he is still working it out in his head".
