Yobe attack: 'Over 90 students allegedly missing after Boko Haram invasion'

To prove that members of the group still pose a threat and not defeated as Nigerians are made to believe by the government and security agents, the group struck few days after the directive by the Chief of Army Staff by attacking Dapchi town in Yobe State.

According to eyewitnesses, the insurgents stormed, the town in a pick-up truck on Monday evening, shooting and setting off explosives.

According to the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the terrorists carted away food items from the stores of the Government Girls College, Dapchi, and petrol from hawkers, who abandoned their products to run for safety.

The Chibok girls represent a fraction of the women captured by the militant group, which has kidnapped thousands during its eight-year insurgency in northern Nigeria.

Dapchi town came under heavy attack of the Boko Haram on Monday night leading to residents including students of Government Girls Secondary school, Dapchi, fleeing into the bush.

In another report published by Daily Trust, a source in the school reportedly claim that the number of missing students was established in the afternoon after a head count. All of us that escaped including our school principal, the vice principal and some other teachers stayed in the deserted house till morning.

Borno state police spokesman Joseph Kwaji confirmed the Friday night attack to The Associated Press.

"Military jets were deployed and are in pursuit", he added.

There are rumors that the insurgents may have abducted some schoolgirls but authorities are yet to confirm this.

"As we were trying to flee the village, we saw some of them coming away from the school gate".

The first round of the mass trials took place last October.

This is in addition to a 15-year sentence he received earlier for taking part in the kidnappings.

The group has consistently attacked education.
