5.85-inch OLED iPhone will be cheaper to make then iPhone X

5.85-inch OLED iPhone will be cheaper to make then iPhone X

Apple is gearing up for a busy 2018, as similar reports have also indicated that they will release three new smartphone options this year.

Apple will be looking to clear out all variables that may lead to the production hampering of its 2018 iPhone lineup. The iPhone X now costs $1000 (or approx Rs 65,085), making it the most expensive smartphone from Apple.

The weak demand for iPhone X, saw the company pulling in a lot fewer OLED panels from Samsung Display than it had committed earlier. The new handsets aren't due until the third quarter at the very least as there's nothing to suggest that Apple is going to stray from its traditional September release for new iPhones.

Apple is reportedly planning to launch three iPhones in 2018, much like what the company had done past year at its Keynote event.

Luke Lin, Research analyst at Digitimes today said that the new 5.85-inch display model of the upcoming iPhone would feature the total bill of materials over 10% lesser than the iPhone X, meaning the price of the upcoming model will be definitely cheaper than the current model.

Citing cost concerns, Apple initially expected the 5.85-inch model to use an LCD, than the more expensive OLED.

While new iPhone announcements have always sent media into a frenzy, there will be more questions raised this year in the wake of the iPhone X. Overall figures for iPhone sales haven't been impressive and analysts point out the increasing prices to be a critical factor. However, the project was suspended "mid-February and may be eventually terminated".

Apple Inc is designing and producing its own device displays for the first time, using a secret manufacturing facility near its California headquarters to make small numbers of the screens for testing purposes, people familiar with the situation said.

The large iPhone is said to have an iPhone X display in a body the size of an iPhone 8 Plus.

However they have proved far more hard to manufacture than OLED displays, and Apple is unlikely to be able to produce them at scale and at a reasonable cost for several years, according to the report.

While that business model has worked for them in the past, rumors surrounding the company claim that Apple is now interested in developing its own parts, so that they can get the upper hand in the competition. Then again, it won't be a true successor of the iPhone X.
