Bird Grounded: New York Yankees 1B Already on the Pine

Bird Grounded: New York Yankees 1B Already on the Pine

The early word on Greg Bird seems to be pretty positive. If Bird's timetable ends up being extended - as was the case previous year thanks to confusion over a diagnosis - then perhaps that stance changes.

However, some would argue this year the Yankees don't need Bird as much. "CT and MRI exams showed no structural damage, but he returned to NY for further evaluation, leading to the broken spur diagnosis".

Boone said the team should learn Bird's status after he's evaluated Monday by a specialist in NY. "We're certainly going to miss Greg, but we feel good about what we can do from a matchup standpoint with those guys". There was always that caveat, though, "if he can stay healthy".

Just before the start of the game Bird was scratched from the lineup due to discomfort in his foot. In three seasons, he has played no more than 48 games in a single year, including missing the entire 2016 campaign. After battling two straight years of injuries, Bird was planned to be penciled right in the middle of the potent Yankees lineup. He did well in a small sample size, slashing.261/.343/.529 with 11 home runs and 31 RBI in 178 plate appearances. "Tyler Austin is ready for this opportunity".

Austin is a right-handed hitter, Wade a lefty and Walker a switch-hitter. Lind remains without a job at this point. Looking back at the contingencies the Yankees had past year, the team is in a much better position to handle a Bird DL stint this go around.

The soreness is in the same foot that caused Bird to miss the majority of last season. Tyler Austin, who had been slated to start the season at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, could see time at first in Bird's absence.
