Eastern Ghouta refugees: 'We left our history, our memories'

Eastern Ghouta refugees: 'We left our history, our memories'

"More than 114,000 people have left Eastern Ghouta with the assistance of the Russian Center for Reconciliation since humanitarian pauses were declared", the statement reads. On Sunday afternoon, almost 1,000 militants and their family members who have left their last strongholds in Eastern Ghouta arrived in the town of Qalat al-Madiq in Hama province, the Syrian news agency SANA reported. The people have been transferred to the Syrian Province of Idlib, large parts of which are still controlled by the rebels and terrorist groups.

Rebel fighters with the Jaish al-Islam group in the Syrian town of Douma, near the capital Damascus, have expressed readiness to lay down their arms and leave the town, Russia's RIA news agency quoted a Russian General Staff official as saying.

A fourth convoy of vehicles carrying civilians and opposition fighters from Eastern Ghouta arrived in the Hama province in west-central Syria on Monday.

Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights placed the number of civilians leaving Eastern Ghouta at 140,000.

"Our experts are looking at them, but clearly since this is an enclave, it's very hard to have access to information and material", said the OPCW's director general. Five weeks since the regime launched an all-out assault on Ghouta, it holds more than 90% of the region.

One area was emptied under such a deal in recent days and evacuations began late on Saturday for a second part, held by the Islamist Faylaq al-Rahman rebel faction.

"This month, it is Eastern Ghouta which is, in the words of the Secretary General, hell on earth; next month or the month after, it will be somewhere else where people face an apocalypse - an apocalypse intended, planned and executed by individuals within the government, apparently with the full backing of some of their foreign supporters", Zeid told the council.
